Casio's WSD-F10 with Android Wear priced at 500$

reznaf | 8:00 AM | , , , , ,

Casio has just launched their inelegantly named but elegantly designed Smart Outdoor Watch WSD-F10 on the Google Play Store, Amazon, REI, and the Casio store. The price tag might seem steep at $499.99, but the device is specifically designed to be tough as nails for those living rugged, outdoor lives.

If you’re a runner, hiker, explorer, or any of the like, this might just be your go-to piece of tech to take along on your journey. We’ve seen plenty of smartwatches aimed at style, but comparatively few looking to be stout devices ready to withstand the wear and tear of more active lifestyles. The gritty little wearable  has a 1.32-inch dual layer display that has a power save option that allows it to swap between color and monotone. With this functionality, you can radically stretch your battery’s lifespan.

From the looks of it, it appears to come pre-loaded with a bunch of outdoorsy apps to assist with hiking, running, or fishing, but nothing is keeping you from installing your favorite apps once you get your hand on it. It’s true the price tag makes it something of an investment, but it really is one of the most rugged Android Wear devices we’ve seen so far.

First official photos of Huawei P9, launch event on 6th of April

reznaf | 12:00 PM | , , , , , , ,

Photos of the much hyped Huawei P9 are up, thanks to the company that decided to give us a peek a bit before the phone’s launch.

Before we get ahead of ourselves, we must realise these are close-up pictures that show a component or two and not much else.

The pictures were put up on the company’s teaser page for the Huawei P9. The page is complete with these pictures and also a timer to remind you about the impending launch.

The dual camera set up is confirmed by the first picture in this series of three. What it also confirms is the meaning behind the hashtag #OO that Huawei has been using to tease the P9.

Apart from that, a rounded-square fingerprint scanner, which should be on the rear of the phone, is seen along with an edge of the device that depicts a glossy yet textured rear.

Multiple versions of this phone are expected to show up at the launch event, which is scheduled for 6th of April.

Guide #8: How to save offline maps in Google maps?

reznaf | 8:00 AM | , , ,

Because not all of us experienced the Lewis & Clark Expedition, mobile devices are a huge help in navigating the world. Phones and tablets have made it extremely easy for us to get from Point A to Point B without actually being familiar with our surroundings. A service like Google Maps, which has hundreds of millions of users, is able to provide so many details based on your needs. Google Maps can explain the estimated travel time, show turn-by-turn directions, and offer local places to drop by and try. Despite all of its beauty, a missing internet connection or even a poor one can ruin the entire experience. That won’t be a problem, though, if you’re downloading an area in Google Maps for offline use. Google understood there may be times when you just can’t get a connection for maintaining navigation, so the company built offline functionality into Google Maps.
Allow me to show you how to save areas for offline use in Google Maps.

1. Make your way over to Google Play to download and install Google Maps if, for whatever reason, your device doesn’t have the app pre-installed or you currently have an outdated version.

2. Once in Google Maps, launch the slideout menu by either swiping from left to right or hitting the dedicated menu button on the far left of the search bar. The next step is for you to choose the obvious selection on the list: Offline areas.

3. Now you’re going to be faced with either blank list of offline areas or perhaps a recommended one of a surrounding area you frequent. To add an entirely new offline area, select the button at the bottom right represented by a plus sign.

4. The app will present a rectangular cutout of a designated area. You can pan around the display to choose the area, but you can also zoom in or out to get more or less of what you want to download for offline use. The minimum amount of space an offline area will take up is 225MB while the maximum is 1.55GB, meaning you’ll want to choose areas wisely to avoid consuming a large portion of your device’s internal storage.

5. The app will generate a suggested name for an offline area, but Google Maps gives you the option to name it for yourself. Decide what you want to name it and Google Maps will start downloading the area directly to your device.

6. Downloading an offline area will be done in about three minutes or so. The time depends on the size of the offline area.

7. Want to manage your offline areas? Just head back to the Offline areas page from the second step. The little gear icon at the top right of this page is where you can decide to have offline areas updated automatically and whether or not maps are downloaded over WiFi only.

8. If you choose an existing offline area from the list, Google Maps will allow you to do actions like renaming, deleting, or updating.

After you’ve completed the steps above, Google Maps will always be your go-to for navigation when needed. Offline areas contain everything you know and love above Google Maps, adding in the extra reassurance that you’ll never be lost somewhere you’ve never been before. We can never predict something bad happening to our devices, and having an offline area is a surety when things take an unfortunate turn.

OnePlus 3 leak shows Snapdragon 820

reznaf | 12:00 PM | , , , , , ,

We’ve already seen a couple Chinese phone makers in Xiaomi and Letv (LeEco) dish out Snapdragon 820 phones, and OnePlus might just be the next with the OnePlus 3.

However, a much larger section of the international audience should be able to get their hands on the OnePlus 3 as compared to the Xiaomi Mi 5 or the Le Max Pro.

Coming to the subject of this article: OnePlus 3 specifications, which leaked thanks to AnTuTu (which is a popular benchmarking app, if you aren’t aware). Here’s what the listing has to tell us about the phone: a 1920 x 1080p display, Snapdragon 820 processor, 4GB RAM, 16 mega-pixel rear camera, 8 mega-pixel front facing camera, 32GB ROM and a model number A3000.

Some might be disappointed to see only a 1080p display on the OnePlus 3, as suggested by the leaks. OnePlus have been known to use OPPO’s designs, and it is likely that the OnePlus 3 and the OPPO Find 9 share a bit in common. This could also explain the 1080p screen; OPPO’s versions could come with higher res ones (as in the case of the OnePlus One/Find 7).

OnePlus have traditionally attacked their competitors with super aggressive pricing. Expect the OnePlus 3 to attempt to pull off something similar.

Best wireless charging pads for Samsung / QI Smartphones

reznaf | 8:00 AM | , , , , , ,

Samsung Fast Charge Wireless Charging Pad

People generally like to buy accessories made by the same company who makes their devices. If you’re one of those people, Samsung’s own wireless charging pad with fast charge capabilities is what you’re going to get and there’s no need to read on. This wireless charging pad, which is priced differently everywhere you look, works with the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge along with all other Qi-ready devices. And you probably won’t need to remove your case or cover to use it.

It has a built-in LED light to tell you whether or not your phone is aligned properly. Select Samsung devices will also alert you when a full charge has been achieved.

With an official option like this, there’s no going wrong.

Pricing: $49-$69

Samsung Fast Charge Wireless Charging Stand

In 2016, Samsung introduced a new wireless charging pad marketed as a “wireless charging stand.”

This in-house wireless charging stand with fast charge technology is just like Samsung’s wireless charging pad. The difference? This one, because it’s a stand, positions your phone on an incline rather than having lie flat. The benefit here is that you can easily access your phone while it’s charging. Picking it up and putting it down is less likely when positioned at an angle. Or, if you’d like to glance over at your phone for information, turn on the always-on display that Samsung debuted with the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge.

Going for the stand over the pad limits your color options to just one choice and raises the praise.

Color options: Black
Pricing: $69

Nekteck Wireless Charging Pad

Up until now, Nekteck was a completely unknown brand to me. That doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with the company and its products. In fact, it seems that all of Nekteck’s products on Amazon are rated with 4-5 stars. So counting out their wireless charging pad just because you’ve never heard of them is a bad move.

Nekteck’s wireless charging pad supports all Qi-ready devices, but the fast charging feature is only compatible with select Samsung phones — the Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge, Galaxy Note 5, and Galaxy S6 Edge+. To activate the fast charging feature, you’ll need to use Samsung or Nekteck’s adapters with Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 2.0 technology.

When your phone is placed on the wireless charging pad, a blue light will illuminate to indicate that your phone is charging.

Easing your mind about buying this wireless charging pad is an 18-month warranty and lifetime customer support from Nektech.

Color options: Black
Pricing: $29

TYLT VU Wireless Charging Stand

The world is full of accessories, and a bunch of my personal favorites come from TYLT. Its products are well-made, colorful, and affordable. Can you ask of more? The VU wireless charging stand has a 3-coil system, comes in four colors, and costs less than you’d expect.

With the 3-coil system, TYLT allows you to put your phone anywhere on the wireless charging stand whether that’s in portrait or landscape orientation. Also, this wireless charging stand is designed at a 45-degree angle so you can still see your phone from anywhere and won’t miss a single notification coming in. The VU’s entire design is so subtle and attractive because of its popping color and the long wire sneaking out of the back. TYLT succeeded here with a very simple, modern aesthetic.

Depending where you shop, you can get TYLT’s VU for less than $50 with free shipping.

Pricing: $49-$69

Choetech Fast Charge Wireless Charging Pad

The first wireless charging pad I ever owned was this one from Choetech. And it has served me well for nearly one year. Choetech’s wireless charging pad, which is the cheapest on the list, costs just $25 and supports fast charging.

Choetech says this wireless charging pad can charge supported devices up to 1.4x faster than competing products, and its built-in sensor lowers the status lights’ strength when charging in a dark room. Like Nektech, Choetech throws in an 18-month warranty.

Those wanting to try out a wireless charging pad for the first time should get Choetech’s product because of its price alone. You’ll be hard-pressed to find another wireless charging pad at a price so low without cutting corners.

Color options: Black
Pricing: $25

Incipio Ghost 220 Wireless Charging Base

Because there’s a very good chance you have more than one Qi-ready device in your home or office, Incipio’s Ghost 220 exists. The Ghost 220 is a wireless charging base that charges up to three devices simultaneously. Through wireless charging, it can charge two devices on once because of the rectangle shape. Then, through a physical wire, the Ghost 220 charges a third device; therefore, even if you have just one device that can be charged without wires, this wireless charging base is still worth it because of the external charging support.

Despite charging more devices at once than other products, the Ghost 220 isn’t very expensive. It can be purchased for as little as $45 with free shipping on Amazon.

Color options: Black
Pricing: $45-$69

Best dating apps for 2016

reznaf | 4:00 PM | , , , , , , ,

Tinder

More people are using Tinder, which is about as simple as they come, than any other dating app in the world and generates around 26 million matches ever day of the year. Tinder is built around choosing potential matches based on photos other users who are nearby have uploaded. It’s based almost entirely on looks because users just swipe left or right anonymously to make a decision. Swiping right means you’re interested in the other person while going the other way just moves you on to another person. The kicker, though, is that the people you swiped right for in approval will have to do the same for you two to be matched and begin exchanging messages.

Tinder uses authentication from Facebook, so I think it’s almost guaranteed that you’re swiping among a group of real people with similar interests and common friends. The app won’t send anything to Facebook — saving you from any embarrassment you may feel being on an online dating app. Information from your profile negates the requirement most apps have to complete a profile and answer a mountain of questions. Tinder gets everything needed from your Facebook profile.

Like most dating apps, Tinder is free with a premium subscription available. The two key features unlocked with a Tinder Plus subscription are Passport and Rewind. Passport allows you to change your location to anywhere in the world to experience a fresh set of locals that could be your next partner in life. Rewind, as the name suggests, makes it possible to take back that last swipe that you may or may not have intended to do. Trust me, I won’t tell your potential matches if you swiped left but took it back out of desperation.

People complain that Tinder is too superficial, but you have to have thick skin while dating because you never know when rejection will slap you in the face. Another downfall is that Tinder lacks a web version, limiting users to use phones and tablets only.

OkCupid

Can you believe OkCupid has been around for twelve years? It’s true. What started with only a web version in 2004 has since expanded to include apps across all major platforms. OkCupid is for anyone who wants their dating life to be accessible on their laptop, phone, and tablet. The service syncs across all of your devices, and OkCupid never pushes you to pay any money. Temporary bonuses exist but none of them are required for you to get the most out of the service.

OkCupid is one of the most complex dating apps because, when setting up a profile, you’re given a massive amount of questions to answer. These responses you provide will be the biggest player in getting OkCupid to show potential matches located in your area. A match percentage is displayed so you have an idea as to whether or not the person you’re about to message shares the same interests and views. But that match percentage is just that. It doesn’t actually mean anything and you’re free to message anyone on OkCupid. What you can do in order to increase the likelihood of chatting with a winner is taking advantage of the Tinder-like swiping feature to notify someone that you’re into them.

Like I said before, OkCupid is free but you can get access to extra features by joining their ‘A-List’ at a price that seems to vary by user. Being an A-List member introduces invisible browsing, read receipts, a bigger inbox, and username changes. It’s not at all necessary and I believe OkCupid offers enough to use without spending a dime because you can view entire profiles at will.

Coffee Meets Bagel

Coffee Meets Bagel was launched in 2012 by the Kang sisters but really became known by many singles after making an appearance on ABC’s Shark Tank. The service’s founders, who sought $500,000 in return for 5% equity of Coffee Meets Bagel, rejected an offer by billionaire Mark Cuban worth $30 million because he wanted to assume complete ownership of the business. Since that Shark Tank episode aired in January 2015, Coffee Meets Bagel has grown to be one of the top dating services out there.

It works in a way similar to Tinder because authentication comes from Facebook, but the difference with Coffee Meets Bagel is that it’s only going to recommend matches who are friends of your friends. Then the really magic can begin. Every day at noon, you’ll be presented with a single match (aka the “Bagel”) that was hand-picked based on common interests and geography. Coffee Meets Bagels says attraction is also included with the formula to create matches, but I’m not confident that there’s a real algorithm to determine it. Mutual friends shared between you and your Bagel are displayed, and then you can decide whether or not to like or pass on that Bagel within twenty-four hours. Assuming both of you like other’s profile, a private chat is built for you two to get to know each other more by exchanging messages and answering ice breaker questions.

Over time, Coffee Meets Bagel learns what you do and don’t like in an effort to improve the Bagel selection. And in case you’re the shy type that will never ask someone else out on a date, Coffee Meets Bagel pushes for you and your Bagel to meet.

The success of Coffee Meets Bagel for you, considering it’s still relatively new, mighty vary but the service claims to have generate over 1 million dates while matching five hundred pairs on a weekly basis. Does it hurt to try the app? No, because using Coffee Meets Bagel is free of any charges.

Grindr

Every of other app listed is missing something at the core that Grindr has: a focus on a specific group of people. Grindr is the world’s leading “social network app” for gay, bisexual, and sexually-curious men. It’s used by over 2 million users in two hundred countries on a daily basis, but those who enter Grindr should go into it with the understanding that the majority of fellow users are seeking hookups. Getting dates out of Grindr is certainly possible; however, don’t be surprised if a blank profile randomly messages you with something as brief and direct as “u lookin?” You’ll need to be a mature person to handle what Grindr’s users send your way.

Grindr is location-based, so all guys on your grid are within a reasonable distance. Select a profile picture and then you can read about the person before starting a chat with them. Profiles are limited to a headline, age, short bio, height, weight, ethnicity, body type, expectations, and relationship status. If that’s not enough for you to build the perfect profile, the app allows linking to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts. That’s really all there is to Grindr before the messaging begins. Also, you can use some of the items as parameters for a filter to see the exact type of guy you want.

The popularity of Grindr, especially among gay men, is insane. Most forgo using anything else because the app gets the job done so well. Grindr’s population is high, the design is simple (albeit dated), and it’s free to use. Grindr Xtra adds things like an ad-free experience, push notifications, and unlimited blocks, and those features can be experienced at no cost with the free 14-day trial.

Grindr should greatly improve later this year because Beijing Kunlun Tech Company invested around $100 million in the company.
