It’s light and grippy, and gives you easy access to all the phone’s ports and buttons. And just because this case is thin doesn’t mean it can’t hold its own — this Composite case meets military drop-test standards (MIL STD 810G 516.6), so your phone will likely survive a drop here and there.

LifeProof FRĒ case

If you’re looking for a case that will offer drop, dirt, snow and water protection, you should buy the LifeProof FRĒ case for your new Galaxy S7. This is a very slim case that doesn’t add on too much bulk, and it’s extremely grippy, too. Your S7 will be fully sealed inside with a built-in screen protector, which will help keep that beautiful Quad HD display from getting scratched.

Speck CandyShell Grip case

Speck is another manufacturer that comes to mind when talking about smartphone cases, and for good reason. The CandyShell Grip case for the Galaxy S7 is designed with both impact and fashion in mind. It’s not too bulky or slippery, and you’ll still have access to all the ports and buttons. The bezels are small around the sides of the display, and they’re also raised so you can put your phone down screen-first on the table without it getting scratched.

Spigen Rugged Armor Resilient case

It wouldn’t be a case roundup post without Spigen. This company has a number of different high-quality cases available on Amazon for just over $10. The first of which is the Rugged Armor Resilient case. It comes with a glossy accents and carbon fiber textures on the back and provides plenty of protection thanks to its flexible TPU material. It has a raised lip of 1.2mm above the display so you can set your phone down screen-first. It also has a unique Air Cushion technology built in for an added method of absorbing shock. It’s sleek, sexy and inexpensive, which we don’t see too often.

The buttons are made of TPU as well, so they’ll definitely be easy to press. This is personally one of my favorite cases on the market, and its definitely worth the money.

Samsung’s Dual Edge display available for Huawei, Xiaomi and Vivo?

Samsung Display looks to expand its AMOLED customers for 2016 with Xiaomi, Huawei and Vivo mentioned as possible curved display customers.

Korean media are reporting that Xiaomi and Huawei could be joining Vivo as customers of Samsung Display’s curved glass panels. The Super AMOLED curved panels have already been found on the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S7, and are set to be shown off on the latest Vivo phone tomorrow.

In addition to Vivo, Huawei is rumoured to be pricing up the new tech and Xiaomi are labeled as a possible customer too.

The fact that Xiaomi are mentioned suggests to us that the Xiaomi Mi Note 2 could be inline for the curved display treatment as this is the only premium Xiaomi phone left to launch for 2016.

Gionee launch the world’s thinnest phone

Last year Gionee held the title for the world’s thinnest phone with the Gionee S5.1 longer than any other company, and at MWC they hope to take the title back. Currently Vivo have the thinnest phone on the market with the Vivo X5 Max, however IVVI will have announced a thinner 4.7mm phone which will go on sale very soon. In third place it is the Oppo R5, and 4th the Gionee S5.1, and Gionee are hot to take the title back.

HTC leaked specs for Desiere device
Purported leaked specification details of the HTC A55 claim it isn’t a flagship, but the hardware certainly looks the part. According to the details the new HTC model will boast a 5.5-inch 2K display, 3GB RAM, 32GB internal memory, 20 mega-pixel front camera and either a 13 mega-pixel or ultrapixel front camera. The phone will run a powerful Mediatek MT6795 octacore processor, a 64bit model with Mediates CorePilot, and ClearMotion technologies for a faster and smoother experience.

Swatch's smartwatch without charging

Swiss watchmaker Swatch has been toying with the idea of a smartwatch for some time, and now CEO Nick Hayek is saying that we can expect in in the next three months. What's most interesting, , is Hayek's claim of a smartwatch that doesn't have to be charged.

There are two potential paths to take for a watch that doesn't have to be charged. The first is an "automatic" watch with an generator spun by the motion of an eccentric-weighted rotor (itself moved by the motion of the wearer's arm). The other approach would be using a watch cell battery, which would offer a much longer battery life than a rechargeable lithium-based battery. Swatch makes watches in both cell batteries and automatic quartz varieties.

Game of Thrones ep.2 arrived

Last week we learned that Games of Thrones Episode 2 was coming to Android on February 5th. As scheduled, “The Lost Lords” has arrived as an in-app purchase for the Game of Thrones app, priced at $4.99. For those that didn’t play the original, the game is based on the HBO series of the same name (and the books by George R. R. Martin, of course) and let’s you make decisions in the role of House Forrester and House Stark. Like with other Telltale series, you control various characters and the action is of the “choose your own adventure” type.

Gionee Elife 7 on sale

The flagship Gionee Elife E7 is now on sale at an amazing sub $200 price tag! Is this Snapdragon 800 phone still worth a shot? Last year Gionee launched their flagship Gionee Elife E7. The launch was a big shock to Chinese phone follows as not only did Gionee ditch Mediatek for Qualcomm, but they also packed their then new phone with an amazing 16 mega-pixel rear camera.

100 000 of Meizu M1 preordered in 1min

Since the dawn of low-cost Chinese phones we have come accustom to seeing huge numbers of devices sold out in just a few minutes and the release of the Meizu m1 was no different. Meizu did shockingly well with 100,000 of the m1 pre-ordered in only 1 minute after the sale began! It’s a great success for the Meizu as a company, but many fans have been left disappointed by the sale and will have to wait for the next batch of phones to arrive before they can have another chance.

More Galaxy Tab tablets coming in 2015

Although some analysts had predicted (and recommended) Samsung reducing its breadth of devices available to the consumer this year, it seems that Samsung still has some surprises up its sleeve. According to GalaxyClub, Samsung has applied for three new trademarks with the Korean IPO: the Samsung Galaxy Tabs A, E and J. These are obviously names for new tablets, which will most likely join the ranks of the Galaxy Tab and Galaxy Tab S in the coming tech release season.

Sony mobile division drowning

Sony revised its forecast for the fiscal year ending March 31 and revealed partial results for the last three months of 2014. Strong console and camera sensors sales have helped offset weak performance in other areas, including mobile. Starting with the mobile unit, Sony sold around 11.9 million smartphones in FQ3, which resulted in an operating profit of around $80 million. Sales volume is up 27 percent compared to the same quarter last year. However, due to the massive impairment charge that Sony booked in September, the company estimates a total loss of around $1.83 billion for the mobile unit in the fiscal year ending March 31. Furthermore, Sony announced more job cuts, with another 1,100 workers to be laid off over the next year, in addition to the 1,000 already announced.

Samsung 'Galaxy NX' Android-based mirrorless camera

Samsung's Android-based, professional-class camera gets leaked ahead of June 20 event

Just hours after Samsung co-CEO JK Shin confirmed that the company will release an Android-powered mirrorless camera, we're already seeing the first leaked promotional shots of the device. Vietnamese tech site Tinh te has published three images of a device bearing the name Galaxy NX -- a product that fuses Samsung's smart device and camera brands.

And it's a big honkin' camera. The Galaxy NX clearly a professional-class product, with interchangeable lenses, a viewfinder, a big grippy body and a large rear display -- a world away from last year's Galaxy Camera. According to Tinh te's post, the NX features a 20.3-megapixel APS-C sensor, 1080p video recording support, max ISO of 25,600 and a dual-core or quad-core Exynos CPU. The touchscreen back is a "high resolution" 4.3-incher, according to the post. No word on connectivity, but there's a signal strength meter on the display, suggesting it'll feature cellular radios of some sort.

If the Galaxy S4 Zoom was Samsung's answer to a consumer-level Android imaging device, then the Galaxy NX is squarely aimed at the professional market, and may attract attention from high-end users who were underwhelmed by the Galaxy Camera's performance. We can only speculate as to the eventual price (we imagine it won't come cheap), but whatever it costs, we're eager to get our hands on the Galaxy NX at Samsung's June 20 "Premiere" event.

We're six months down the road from our last "best Android phones" roundup, and the smartphone landscape has altered dramatically. Back in December we crowned the Samsung Galaxy S3 king of all Android phones, on account of its responsiveness, broad availability and excellent performance across the board. A generation later, the Android space is dominated by two new heavyweights -- the Galaxy S4 and HTC One, with other contenders including the Xperia Z and ZL from Sony and LG's Nexus 4.

In mid-2013, buttery-smooth performance, beautiful screens, high-quality cameras, 4G LTE connectivity and Jelly Bean out of the box come as standard at the high-end. Competition is more fierce than ever, and that's resulted in some of the best Android hardware we've ever seen.
But there can be only one winner. Join us after the break to find out which phone takes the prize.

The best of the best - HTC One

We really have reached the point where the top of the Android smartphone market is blanketed by some highly impressive devices. It's tough to go wrong. There's something for everyone, be it form factor or features or gimmicks and gizmos. But for our money, there's currently no better phone available than the HTC One.

There's a lot to like here. The (mostly) all-aluminum body looks and feels more sophisticated than a plastic phone, and the gentle curve fits the hand nicely. While we've still got our quibbles with the Sense user interface, Sense 5 is the most stylish version yet, and most important is that it doesn't exhibit the lag that we've seen in the Samsung Galaxy S4.

The front-facing stereo speakers change the way you experience music and videos on a smartphone. Games and movies are much more immersive and are a downright pleasure to play and listen to. There are a few times when the speakers may be too loud, but there are many more times when you're amazed you're getting that sort of sound from a smartphone.

HTC's camera also brought forth a bit of a paradigm shift. It's not the best all-around camera -- it suffers from contrast issues, and if you need something with a higher total resolution for enlarging pictures, you'll need to look elsewhere. But the introduction of Zoes -- the 3-second video clips -- and the introduction of automatically composed Video Highlights are something that nobody else is doing, and they make up for a lackluster camera application.
The HTC One also has been released on three of the four major U.S. carriers, as well as seeing wide availability worldwide -- and we're expecting Verizon to get its own variant this year as well.
In the months we've been using the HTC One, it's continuously caught the eyes of those around us and continued to impress us with its performance -- and for that it ranks as our best smartphone for first part of 2013.

The runner-up - Samsung Galaxy S4

If ever there was a phone to beat, it was this one. Samsung took everything that was good in the Galaxy S3 and made it better in its successor, the Galaxy S4.

Well, maybe not quite everything. The plastic body remains a turn-off for many, and it's certainly not as chic as the aluminum HTC One. It's also lost a bit of the curve of the Galaxy S3. And while Samsung has managed to squeeze a 5-inch display into the same size as the slightly smaller Galaxy S3, the IPS or Super LCD displays on other phones perform better in sunlight and seems to better handle shifts in brightness. The TouchWiz user interface has been refined a bit, but it's still flat in places and doesn't match the sophistication of other UIs.

Samsung's camera, however, remains the best in the business, as far as everyday use is concerned. It's filled with features, and the camera app itself is a joy to use, having been adapted from the high-end Samsung Galaxy Camera. You might not use features like the animated gif creator every day, but they're fun to have, even if they're not all that innovative.

But what landed the Galaxy S4 as our No. 2 is the laggy user interface -- we've experienced delays and stutters on a number of versions of the phone -- as well as the anemic storage situation. Samsung's 16-gigabyte version of the GS4 only has about 9 gigabytes of storage available to the end user. And while Samsung likes to say you can add another 64 gigabytes with a microSD card, that's a different kind of storage. Good luck keeping your larger games and apps on there. The sin isn't so much that Samsung's using all that space for the hundreds of features on the phone -- and it's got some really good preloaded apps and settings. The sin is that in 2013, that sort of deceptive marking and, for many, a lack of larger storage options, is unacceptable.

Would we recommend someone buy the Galaxy S4, which is available on just about every carrier on Earth? Absolutely. It just might not be the first phone we suggest.

The best oversized phone - LG Optimus G Pro

The other South Korean manufacturer -- LG -- has a bit of a dark horse on its hands with the Optimus G Pro. It's a 5.5-inch phone -- in the same class as the wildly popular Samsung Galaxy Note 2, but without the pen input. It also improves on the Note with a higher-resolution display, updated internals and a slightly narrower body.

LG's user interface still leaves a bit to be desired, but it's also come a long way in a short time. The Optimus G Pro has a more-than-capable camera, and it's the first outside of the Nexus line to sport the Photosphere feature.

Hamstringing the Optimus G Pro, however, is availability. In the United States, it's only available on AT&T, and it's seen limited release worldwide as well, though that's beginning to change. We're also expecting Samsung to at least match the Optimus G Pro's specs and features later this year. But for now, it's a pleasant addition to the oversized phone market.

Honorable mentions

It's not fair to just focus on the top three. Here are a few other contenders that are worth a look if the latest Samsung, HTC and LG handsets don't float your boat.

Sony Xperia Z and Xperia ZL

The Xperia Z for Europe and Xperia ZL for North America put Sony back in the game. The Japanese manufacturer might be something of an outcast as far as U.S. carriers support goes, but its latest Android smartphones have a lot to offer. Speedy performance, a clean UI and great camera software are highlights for both the Z and ZL. The Xperia Z also offers water resistant capabilities, though at the cost of ergonomics -- it's a blocky handset that can be uncomfortable to use. And both phones suffer from poor viewing angles, though on-screen images are crisp and clear when viewed head-on. Overall, both the Xperia Z and Xperia ZL are decent phones, but not without their share of niggling issues.

LG Nexus 4

Despite the recent trend towards "Google Editions" of popular phones like the Galaxy S4 and HTC One, there's only one real Nexus, and LG and Google's collaboration remains the best value Android phone you can buy. (As ever, we'd recommend you spend a little extra and pick up the 16GB model.)

In mid-2013, the Nexus 4's main weakness is its lack of (official) LTE support. We don't know whether the dormant T-Mobile LTE capabilities will be reactivated, but we can't help thinking if that was going to happen, it would've happened by now. So with the Nexus 4 you're going to top out at DC-HSDPA (42Mbps) data speeds. For some buyers, that's no big deal; for others, it's a deal-breaker. Aside from that, you're looking at a very speedy phone with stock Android, lightning-fast updates from Google and recently a new white color option, if the standard black model isn't doing it for you. Even now, we'd struggle to think of a better phone for the $300-350 contract-free asking price.

Samsung Galaxy S3

Now 12 months old, the Galaxy S3 is positively geriatric by smartphone standards. But the GS3 is still being sold by carriers around the world, and some are even just getting around to launching it. Much of the praise we heaped upon the GS3 back in December still applies today -- it's still fast, feature-packed, LTE-capable and eminently available wherever in the world you happen to be. The one part of the S3 that hasn't aged so well is the screen -- compared to the current crop of smartphone displays, it's not great. If we were being unkind, we might even call it below-average. But if you're looking for a good, solid mid-level phone that won't cost you much on-contract, the GS3 fits the bill -- just be aware that you're already a year into its life cycle at this point.

Galaxy S4 unboxing

 

My time has finally come. It's time I put down ... the other phone I've been using and pick up the Samsung Galaxy S4. Alex Dobie did a stellar job with our deep-dive Galaxy S4 review on Sprint's variant, and now I've got AT&T's in house.

Hardware-wise, we're not really looking at anything different here. Same 5-inch Super AMOLED display. Same Android 4.2.2 with Samsung's TouchWiz atop it. Same 1.9 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor. Same paltry 16GB of on-board storage space -- only we know that's not quite true.

Where AT&T differs from Sprint, aside from a handful of AT&T-specific applications -- of course is in the network. So we'll see how this thing handles a day of proper LTE versus spotty EVDO. Like many of you, I'm particularly interested in the camera. Will it be a better all-around choice? Will I miss Zoes and Video Highlights too much? Will I, like so many of you, be underwhelmed by an iterative design instead of a radical overhaul?

MWC 2013 - Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 officially in Q2

We've seen it leaked a few times, but Samsung has beaten the Mobile World Congress rush and officially unveiled the Galaxy Note 8.0. The device is basically a super-sized version of the Note 2 smartphone, right down to the physical home button (a first for Samsung's post-Android 3.0 tablets), call capability, and vertical orientation.

  

The screen is an 8-inch 1280x800 panel, and it's unfortunately a TFT LCD - I had been hoping that they would make it Super AMOLED, and create a spiritual successor to the sadly underutilized Galaxy Tab 7.7. Naturally, you get the S-Pen and all of Samsung's custom TouchWiz applications on top of Android 4.1.2. Underneath the hood you get a beefy 1.6Ghz Exynos A9 quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 16 or 32GB of storage, and an open MicroSD card slot. The rear camera is a serviceable 5 megapixels, with a typical 1.3MP front shooter. The 4600mAh battery should provide plenty of runtime.
The smartphone-style hardware has proven divisive - the thing looks like someone took a rolling pin to the later generation of Galaxy smartphones. At the moment an HSPA+ version is confirmed for an international release with phone capabilities in some territories, but a WiFi version should be coming at launch or soon after.
A worldwide release is scheduled for the second quarter of this year, though Samsung informs us that distribution in the United States has not been finalized. At the time of writing, there is no price information available.

CES 2013 - Samsung Announces The Exynos 5 Octa, A Screaming 28nm 8-Core Processor

Oh man, if you thought quad-core phones were crazy, your brain should prepare itself for at least twice as much explosion. Samsung just announced at CES its new Exynos 5 Octa processors. These chips, on a 28nm architecture (which means they're small and use less power) have eight dang cores. The company says that this will result in up to 70% battery savings (compared to what is unclear...we would assume the previous Exynos processor).

Of course, the first thought is, "Do we really need that many cores?!" Well, for starters, yes. We'll always want more power. But, let's talk practicality! These new SoCs are designed to optimize for multitasking and hardcore video rendering (including 3D), not necessarily pure speed. Which makes perfect sense. Your desktop has been multitasking forever, but our mobile processors (and OSes, really) aren't as great at it. Yet. We're still scratching the surface.

One thing that will aid this is the big.LITTLE architecture. You see, those 8 cores inside the Exynos 5 Octa are not all equal. Four of them are Cortex A7 cores, and four are Cortex A15 cores. The A15s use more power but can turn out serious speed, whereas the A7s are slower, but use less juice. Think of it this way: this SoC will have two different engines in it. One came straight out of a Ferrari for when you feel like flying down the freeway, flipping off cops, and one is from that Prius you make fun of that gets better gas mileage than your car. Your phone or tablet would be able to switch between the two as needed, resulting in high performance without sacrificing battery.

It's win-freaking-win.

Of course, to be a little cynical, you won't necessarily have access to eight cores at once. The two sets of four cores are subdivided into pairs of one low-power core and one high-power core. Only one of those two can be active at once, so you could never use more than four cores at the same time. However, that's still an insanely impressive performance boost while maintaining huge battery savings.

No word yet on when we'll see these beasts in devices, but chances are good Samsung will be eager to put them in as many upcoming high-end handsets and tablets as possible.
